Housing is the reason I decided to stop traveling. My first assignment was in Washington, DC. The apartment was great: clean, modern, truly fully furnished. No complaints.
Then I went to a small New England town. The apartment was roomy but very cold with lots of deferred maintenance, not very clean and really cold. I asked the landlords to shampoo the rugs and clean the bugs out of light fixtures and they said no. They said no to most everything, although they did finally fix a plumbing issue.
After that, I went to another little New England town. There was literally no housing. I stayed in a charming old Inn, but the room was small with very limited cooking abilities and the Inn itself was closed due to COVID.
I then returned to the same town and was housed in a really nice apartment. It was clean, it was roomy; it was great. Unfortunately while my employer dithered about whether or for how long to extend my contract, the landlord got impatient and leased the apartment. There were literally no housing options for me and the employer had to void the contract. Sad, because I loved the town and the job.
Now, I’m in a very small town in the Rocky Mountains. There is a very nice Lodge with extended say amenities but my company said it is too expensive. Instead, I live in the basement of an elderly woman’s house. It’s cold, dark, smelly, cluttered, ancient.
I have found that what you go home to really matters when you are away from home-especially during COVID.
My advice: know exactly where you will be living before you sign a contract.
Yes I agree, I always like to know where I am living before I move forward with the contract.
